Ask Shorty Cakes

13 Dec

Dear Shorty Cakes,

I am a late twenty-something newly engaged gal who has been to a fair share of weddings in her day. I am curious how you feel about wedding cakes v. dessert bars v. ice cream bar dilemma brides face in this day and age. Will there be a wedding pie or muffin phenomena in the future? I am curious to know your thoughts.

Regards,
Engaged-in-the-Glen

Dear Engaged-in-the-Glen,

Thank you for your thoughtful question and congratulations, anonymous bride-to-be. I’ve definitely noticed a phasing out of the traditional wedding cake and I’ve heard that Dangerously Delicious has catered a wedding or two. My friends’ wedding this past October featured an assortment of mini cupcakes for dessert, which I thought was a cute idea and offered options for picky guests. Unfortunately, there wasn’t the big ceremonial cutting of the cake and consequential shoving of cake in mouths. For some reason, I feel like your family would get a kick out of this, especially your sister. Not that I know you have a sister.

Anywho, I found this wedding blog with beautiful pictures of pie weddings. I think it’s a nice idea for a rustic, autumn wedding, and I also think a sundae bar could be a fun idea, especially if your wedding is super formal. I like the irony of that. But, for some reason, I get the feeling that your wedding will be in the winter, so I think a decadent cake might be a good, if traditional, choice.

Although, I did make these mini chocolate cream pies at work today and they’re pretty adorable.

I think something like that would be cool to have in addition to a cake. I mean, who says you can’t have it all?

As for muffins, I don’t consider them dessert. Although, I’m weird enough that if I get married, I’ll probably have a muffin buffet. And then I’ll complain the whole time about them not being as good as mine.
